Car and Goods Shipping Company from Saudi Arabia to Singapore 0506688227 Three Months Before, Three Months After
Guide summary

Car and goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Singapore — where relief is requested before your shipment arrives. Duty is near non-existent, but tax is assessed on your effects unless relief is granted. Its conditions: three months' possession — the shortest in the series — and an undertaking not to dispose of the goods for three months after import.

Looking for a car and goods shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Singapore that knows your relief must be requested before your shipment arrives, not after? Tiger Cargo Express ships goods, furniture, boxes and vehicles to Singapore by sea and air, with dismantling, packing and reassembly, clearance at both ends, and cargo insurance. To book: 0506688227

The route runs east across the Indian Ocean to the Strait of Malacca — ending at the Port of Singapore, one of the world’s most efficient and most disciplined ports.

We wrote a little earlier about Hong Kong: an island city, a free port, no duty and no tax, and the simplest file in our series. Singapore is its twin in almost everything — except the thing that matters most:

Hong Kong does not ask you. Singapore asks you before you arrive.

The default here is that all used effects entering Singapore attract goods and services taxunless relief is granted. And relief is requested; it is not granted automatically.

It has two time conditions bracketing your shipment from both sides:

Three months before shipping to qualify. And three months after arrival to keep what you qualified for.

3months of possession — the shortest in the series
3months of undertaking after import
6months from your first arrival
1declaration that precedes entry

What do we ship from Saudi Arabia to Singapore?

Traffic on this lane is overwhelmingly professional: people relocating on contracts in finance, technology and logistics, students, and business travellers.

Furniture and household effectsA whole home or part of one — with a declaration of facts submitted before it arrives.
Boxes and small shipmentsA few boxes rather than a container — the best fit for this destination, given how compact the housing is.
Home appliancesFridge, washing machine, television — and the voltage here is close to the Gulf’s, which is a relief.
Commercial goodsFor companies and importers — on a route separate from personal effects.
VehiclesAnd their story here is harsher than at any destination in our series — as we explain in their section.
Mission and organisation cargoTheir presence in Singapore is substantial — on its own separate route.

No customs duty — but tax on everything

Sea freight from Saudi Arabia to the Port of Singapore with glass towers behind the yard
One of the world’s most efficient ports — and the discipline starts weeks before the quay.

Singapore is an intensely open economy, and customs duty there is close to non-existent on most items. The dutiable goods fall into four categories: alcoholic drinks, tobacco, petroleum products and motor vehicles.

⭐ But “no duty” is one thing, and “no tax” is another entirely
Singapore levies goods and services tax on importsincluding your used effects.

Note the difference from its neighbour in the previous article:

▸ 🇭🇰 Hong Kong: no duty and no value-added tax. Your household enters without a calculation.
▸ 🇸🇬 Singapore: no duty on most items, but tax is assessed on your effectsunless relief is granted.

Which means the concept of “relief” — which we said does not exist in Hong Kongreturns here in full: with its conditions, its window and its paperwork.

⚠️ And an important caveat: some items are not granted relief even if you personally meet every condition — eligibility is personal, exclusions are by category, and the two are separate questions.

So we review your list item by item after we review your eligibility — not before it and not instead of it.

Aspect 🇭🇰 Hong Kong 🇸🇬 Singapore
Customs duty None — four categories only Near non-existent — four categories only
⭐ Tax on your effects None at all Assessed — unless relief is granted
The concept of relief Does not exist — there is nothing to be relieved of Fully in place — requested, not granted automatically
Where is the battle? In the building — the lift and the door In the paperwork and its timing — then in the building

Note the last row. Singapore combines two battles: a paper submitted on time as in the USA, and a tight building whose lift must be booked as in Hong Kong. It is thereby the closest of the two destinations to each other and the furthest at once.

The declaration of facts — a paper that precedes your shipment’s entry

A declaration of facts submitted before the shipment enters Singapore
The declaration has gone and the shipment has not arrived — and that is the right order.

To obtain relief, a declaration of facts is submitted electronically to Singapore customs. And here is the detail most often got wrong by anyone who has not shipped to Singapore before:

⭐ It is submitted before the goods enter customs territory
Not after they arrive, not at clearance, and not when you are notified of berthing.

Before they enter.

And anyone who submits it late has not merely been slow — they may not be granted relief at all.

Note the parallel with the USA: there, a security filing precedes loading in Jeddah; here, a declaration precedes entry into Singapore.

The difference is that the American one stops you sailing, and the Singaporean one stops you being relieved.

⚠️ And neither can be fixed once missed.

So we prepare and submit your declaration while your shipment is still at sea — not when it berths.

If relief is grantedAn in-non-payment permit is issued — and your shipment enters without goods and services tax being assessed on it.
If it is not grantedAn in-payment permit is issued — and tax is assessed on the value of your effects at the prevailing rate.

⭐ Three months before — and three months after

This is the section that sets Singapore apart from the fifty-four destinations we wrote before it.

⭐ First condition: three months’ possessionThat you have owned and used the items for three months or morethe shortest period in our whole series.
Second condition: six monthsThat the import takes place within six months of your first arrival — like the windows in Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
⭐⭐ Third condition: the undertakingNot to dispose of the goods within three months of their importationan obligation that begins after delivery rather than ending with it.
And who qualifiesA citizen or permanent resident returning to reside, or a foreigner transferring residence to Singapore.
⭐ Pause on the third condition — it is entirely unique
Across fifty-four earlier destinations, your obligation ended at a single moment: the delivery of your shipment to your door.

It is cleared, it is delivered, and the file closes.

Here a new obligation begins after the file closes: not to sell, gift or otherwise dispose of those goods for three months from the date of their importation.

The logic is clear and reasonable: the relief was granted because you are moving your home — not so that you can import relieved goods and sell them.

⚠️ Which means in practice: someone who arrives, then decides a month later that their sofa does not suit their compact apartment and sells it, may have breached an undertaking they signed.

And we tell you this plainly before you ship, not after you sell. Because the worst thing a client can learn is that they breached a condition nobody told them about.

⭐ And the first condition has a pleasant other face
Three months’ possession only — the shortest period in our whole series.

Compare:

▸ 🇸🇬 Singapore: three months.
▸ 🇨🇦 Canada: six months for some categories.
▸ 🇺🇸 🇦🇺 The USA and Australia: twelve months.
▸ 🇳🇿 New Zealand: twenty-one months.

Which means someone who bought their furniture four months before relocating — which is what many do after a sudden decisionmeets Singapore’s condition and does not meet Australia’s.

Singapore is generous at the entrance and precise at the exit.

A note on this section
What we set out is the framework in force as we work with it in practice, and some details are decided case by case by the competent authority. Requirements are subject to update, and the tax rate has changed more than once recently, so we do not state it as a figure. So we review the current position with you before booking. We prepare the file and coordinate the timing — we do not give legal, tax or immigration advice.

Shipping for embassies, missions and organisations

And its angle here concerns the undertaking specifically.

Shipments for diplomatic and consular missions and their staff do not run through the personal-effects route and are not bound by its conditions — neither the three-month requirement nor the six-month window. The basis here is the mission’s status or your accreditation to it, the reference framework is the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, and treatment is approved through the competent official channels.

And this is the clearest difference from every other client here
We explained that relief here is requested through a declaration preceding entry, and that it is conditional on an undertaking extending three months beyond delivery.

Mission cargo is not read by that logic at allthere is no individual undertaking extending past delivery, and no six-month window counted from a person’s arrival.

Which means that the longest obligation in this article — the only one that begins after you close the file — does not exist in a mission’s file.

So the file differs from the outset. And the first question here is: “what is the consignee’s status, and who addresses us officially?” — not “when was your first arrival?”.

Official mission cargoOffice furniture, fit-out, equipment and vehicles in the mission’s name — the consignee is the mission itself.
Accredited staff effectsHousehold and personal effects for the diplomat and their family, at the start or end of a posting.
International organisationsTheir presence in Singapore is very substantial — treatment follows their status and headquarters agreement.
  • We settle the status first and build the file on it — not the other way round.
  • We do not push mission cargo into the individual relief route nor seek an undertaking that does not apply to it.
  • We begin with the competent department, not the individual — official correspondence is the foundation of the whole file.
  • We match the consignee’s name and status between the correspondence and the bill of lading letter for letter before issue.
  • ⭐ We book the goods lift and the delivery window with building management in advance — because the towers here are like Hong Kong’s.
  • We treat everything in strict confidence — information, contents and movement dates.

And we say plainly: determining what the exemption covers and its extent rests with the competent authorities, and the mission has its own channels. Our role is purely logistical. We work both directions.

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Singapore

Checking a vehicle's specification in a warehouse before shipping to Singapore
The vehicle file stands alone — and the question here is harsher than anywhere before.

This is the harshest car section in our entire series — and we say it with complete clarity.

⭐ Why we advise against shipping in the strongest terms we have used
Because Singapore manages the number of vehicles on the island deliberately; it is not an open market:

Vehicles are among the dutiable categories — so they carry customs duty and tax together, not one or the other.
▸ ⭐ And owning a vehicle requires a certificate of entitlement issued in limited numbers and bought at auction — its value is among the highest in the world, and may exceed the vehicle’s own value several times over.
Plus additional registration charges assessed on the vehicle’s value.
Plus specification and inspection requirements before registration, and strict limits on an imported vehicle’s age.
And a metro and bus network among the world’s most efficient on an island you can cross by car in under an hour.

The result is that freight may be a marginal line, barely worth mentioning beside the cost of ownership.

And we say so even though we lose the whole line: in Singapore specifically, the question is not “what does shipping cost?” nor even “where will you park it?” — it is “can you own it at all?”.

If you have a special case that genuinely justifies it, we review the model, year and specification with you before booking and prepare its file separately from the furniture fileand we ask you first: have you settled the certificate of entitlement question?

Furniture and goods moving company from Saudi Arabia to Singapore

And the work here is paperwork first, building second.

Furniture delivery at the entrance of a modern Singaporean residential building
An orderly delivery through the service lift — on a slot booked in advance.
  • ⭐ Preparing and submitting the declaration of facts before the shipment enters: while it is still at sea — not when it berths.
  • ⭐ Explaining the undertaking to you before you sign it: not disposing of the goods for three months after importbecause the worst thing a client can learn is a condition nobody told them about.
  • ⭐ Separating out items not eligible for relief: some are not granted it even where you meet the conditions — and we put them on their own stated line rather than let them surprise you.
  • ⭐ Matching the measurements before pricing: your apartment’s floor area, its door width and its lift size — because housing here is designed to precise dimensions, as in Hong Kong.
  • Booking the service lift early: with building management — and its slots are limited in residential towers.
  • Survey and volume estimate: in cubic metres — even for a few boxes, because we serve small shipments and not only containers.
  • Dismantling, unpacking and reassembly: in your apartment, with the packing waste removed the same day.

Port of entry

Singapore is a city state — so the question here is not choosing among several ports as in the USA, Canada and Australia, but one gateway and then a short distance.

Gateway Location Notes
⭐ Port of Singapore Pasir Panjang and Tuas terminals Among the world’s most efficient and disciplined ports — handling is very fast
Changi Airport East of the island One of Asia’s largest air-cargo hubs — for urgent and small consignments
The inland distance Very short No long overland runs — the island is crossed in under an hour
⭐ And the decisive stage Before arrival The declaration of facts — the port is fast, and the paper is what precedes it

Note the last row. In Taiwan the decisive stage came after the quay — devanning at a bonded warehouse. Here the decisive stage comes weeks before it. The port itself is among the fastest we deal with anywhere.

Shipping methods — sea and air

Sea ⭐The most efficient choice for medium and large volumes, routed east across the Indian Ocean to the Strait of Malacca with no passage through the Suez Canal. And Singapore’s schedules are among the densest in the world.
⭐ Air — a serious option hereNot a luxury. Shipments to Singapore are small by nature given how compact the housing is, and Changi is one of Asia’s largest air-cargo hubs.
⭐ And a detail on postal parcelsPostal parcels of non-controlled goods do not require a relief permit — a genuine simplification for anyone sending a few boxes.

Full container, shared load or boxes?

Aspect Full container Shared load Boxes or air
When it suits you A whole home — which is rare here A room or two plus appliances The most common for this destination
⭐ Against your apartment’s size Your home may not hold it — housing is designed to precise dimensions A balanced choice for most cases The best fit — and you buy the rest to the room’s dimensions
⭐ Declaration and relief Required — and its tax value is larger Required as well And postal parcels of non-controlled goods do not need it
Pricing A fixed container rate Per cubic metre with a minimum Per box or by volumetric weight

Note the second row — it is Hong Kong’s logic exactly. Housing here is designed to precise dimensions, and we clearly favour the smaller shipment. And a tax consideration is added: the less you ship, the less value there is to be taxed if relief is not granted.

Shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Singapore

The final quote is built on the survey and your home’s dimensions — with the declaration line stated in it.

Shipment type or line Price Unit and notes
Boxes and small shipments Request a quote — set by survey Per box or by weight — the most common here
Shared load (LCL) Request a quote — set by survey Per cubic metre with a minimum
20ft / 40ft container Request a quote — set by survey And we ask first: will your home hold it?
Air freight Request a quote — set by survey By volumetric weight — a serious option here, not a luxury
⭐ Preparing and submitting the declaration of facts Set in the quote, by your destination Before the shipment enters — and it is what opens the door to relief
⚠️ Goods and services tax Set after your file is reviewed On whatever is not granted relief — at the prevailing rate
⭐ Service lift booking and apartment delivery Set in the quote, by your destination On management’s slots — the line that replaces the long inland run
⚠️ The vehicle file Set after your file is reviewed Preceded by the certificate of entitlement question — not by a price calculation

Note the green line against the red one. The declaration of facts is what separates them: submitted on time, the door to relief opens; submitted late, the red line becomes a real item on your invoice.

⭐ Was relief granted? The factor most specific here — it decides whether tax is a line on your invoice or not.
⭐ Your home’s dimensionsFloor area, door width and lift size — and they govern what is worth shipping at all.
Volume, not weightSea freight is priced by cubic metre. A light sofa takes more room than a heavy box of books.
How much is not eligibleSome items are not granted relief even where you meet the conditions — and we separate them in advance.
Your floor and building typeService lift slots are limited in residential towers and booked in advance.
Whether there is a vehicleA separate file — preceded by the entitlement question, not the price question.

Documents required

⭐ The part most specific to SingaporeThe declaration of facts — submitted before the shipment enters · evidence that you are transferring residence: a work or residence pass or its equivalent · your first arrival date for counting the six-month window · the undertaking not to dispose for three months.
The shipment fileA passport copy · the bill of lading · a detailed numbered English inventory with estimated values · timber treatment certificates · proof of the delivery address and its dimensions · clearance authorisation.
The two questions we open with
First: when was your first arrival in Singapore?the six-month window is counted from it, and anyone measuring from their visa or contract date has it wrong.

Second: what is your home’s floor area, door width and lift size?a question nobody asks before pricing, but here it determines what is worth shipping at all.

Note that the first is documentary and the second dimensionaland these are Singapore’s two battles together.

Anyone who asks you only about cubic metres will price you a container your home may not hold — and then deliver it to you.

Clearance and standing charges

We handle clearance at both ends. The Port of Singapore is among the fastest we deal with anywhere in the world — handling is disciplined, procedures are automated, and the distance to any address on the island is short.

⭐ So delay here usually has one cause
Not the port, not the road, not an inspection.

A paper that was not submitted on time.

Singapore does not hold you up with bureaucracy but with discipline: everything works precisely, on condition that it arrives on schedule.

And anyone submitting the declaration of facts late is not waiting in a queue — they may lose the relief entirely.

There is a second cause with nothing to do with customs: the service lift slot. A shipment cleared the same day may wait three days for a lift booking.

So we book the lift and send the declaration at the same time — before the vessel berths.

Prohibited and restricted items

  • Flammables and pressurised goods: aerosols, paints, solvents, fuel and gas — excluded entirely.
  • ⭐ Chewing gum: prohibited — except therapeutic types approved by the competent health authority. This is not an anecdote but a rule in force.
  • ⭐ Pistol-shaped lighters: explicitly prohibited — and a common souvenir gift.
  • Controlled substances: with penalties among the severest in the world — and no room whatsoever for laxity.
  • Weapons, ammunition and replicas: of every kind, under strict control.
  • Animals, animal products and plants: requiring licences from the competent authorities.
  • Medicines and radio equipment: restricted and requiring prior approvals.
  • Publications and films: subject to content regulation — a category often overlooked.
⭐ And an important distinction between three categories people confuse
Prohibited: does not enter at all — chewing gum, pistol-shaped lighters.
Restricted: enters with a licence — medicines, radio equipment, plants.
▸ ⭐ Not eligible for relief: enters lawfully but is taxed even where you meet every condition.

The third category is the one that surprises people — because it does not appear on any prohibited list, nobody stops it, and then it appears as a line on the invoice.

We sort your list into these three categories before packing — not after the invoice arrives.

Packing and insurance

The challenge on this lane is high tropical humidity all year round, alongside the move from a long sea voyage into an air-conditioned apartment.

⭐ Reinforced humidity protectionHumidity is high all year — and wood, leather, books and electronics are the most affected.
⭐ Packing that fits through a narrow doorA wrapped piece grows — and we measure the door and the lift against it packed, not bare.
Treated and marked timberEvery crate and pallet — with the certificates kept in the file.
⭐ Insurance values matching the declarationWe verify that the values in the declaration, the inventory and the policy are consistent — inconsistency raises questions nobody needs.

Inland delivery — the second battle

⭐ And the logic here is Hong Kong’s logic
Once the paperwork battle ends, the building battle begins:

Most housing is towers and estates — not detached houses.
The service lift is booked with management, its slots are limited and may be taken days ahead.
Some estates bar delivery at certain hours or at weekends.
And housing is designed to precise dimensions — a piece that fits through the door may find nowhere to stand.

⚠️ The difference from Hong Kong is that the distance from the port is very short — there is no overland run to speak of.

Which means almost all your time is spent in two stages only: the paper before arrival, and the lift after it.

  • We book the service lift with management before the arrival date — not on the day.
  • We match the door and lift dimensions against your largest piece as packed, not bare.
  • We follow the estate’s rules on delivery hours and protection of floors and lifts.
  • We remove packing waste the same daybecause space here is too valuable to be filled with cardboard.
  • And we plan for the heavy short downpours in protecting the load during unloading.

The reverse direction — Singapore to Saudi Arabia

We work both directions on the same port and routes. The dominant traffic out of Singapore is electronics and semiconductors, precision and medical equipment, chemicals and petroleum products, spare parts and marine equipment, alongside the effects of those returning.

We review your list before loading in both directions, with attention to Saudi import restrictions and to re-export requirements on certain technical components — a matter settled before booking rather than after.

How to choose a shipping company to Singapore

“When will you submit the declaration of facts?”Anyone answering “on arrival” may already have cost you the relief — it is submitted before the shipment enters.
“What is this undertaking I am signing?”Anyone not explaining it has you sign an obligation extending three months past delivery without knowing.
“What are my home’s and lift’s dimensions?”Anyone not asking may price you a container your home cannot hold — and then deliver it.
“Does my list hold ineligible items?”Anyone not sorting them leaves them to appear as a tax line on your invoice.
“When was my first arrival?”Anyone counting the window from your visa or contract is building on the wrong date.
“Have you booked the service lift?”Anyone leaving it to delivery day may hold a cleared shipment for three days.

Our written guarantees

⭐ The declaration goes before the shipment entersWhile it is still at sea — not when it berths, because a late one may not be granted relief.
⭐ We explain the undertaking before you sign itThree months after importbecause the worst thing a client can learn is a condition nobody told them about.
⭐ We sort ineligible items in advanceOn their own stated line — rather than letting them appear as a surprise on the invoice.
⭐ We match the dimensions before pricingArea, door and lift — and we tell you what is not worth shipping at all.
The service lift booked earlyWith management — at the same time as the declaration goes, not after berthing.
Consistent values across all documentsBetween the declaration, the inventory and the policy — because inconsistency raises questions nobody needs.

How to lower the cost of your shipment

  • ⭐ Ship less — the saving here is doubled. Less shipped means less value to be taxed if relief is not granted, less transport cost, and less congestion in a compact apartment.
  • ⭐ Settle the declaration early. It is the difference between a tax line and none — and it cannot be fixed once missed.
  • ⭐ Measure before you ship. A piece that will not fit through your door is a total loss: you paid to ship it, then you pay to remove it.
  • Consider air seriously. It is not a luxury at this destination — shipments here are small by nature.
  • Sort the ineligible items in advance. You may find that selling an item and buying its replacement there costs less than shipping it with its tax.
  • Do not ship large furniture “in hope”. Housing here is designed to precise dimensions — send us the apartment plan if you have one.
  • Allow full dismantling. It cuts volume and solves the door and the lift together.

When do rates rise and transits lengthen?

Period or situation What happens
⭐ Lunar New Year A broad administrative and operational pause across the region — affecting clearance and estate lifts alike. We schedule around it, not into it.
⭐ Staff relocation season — mid-year The peak of corporate moves — and the pressure falls on service lifts in residential estates more than on the port.
Peak freight before commercial seasons Singapore is a global transhipment hub — and vessel space tightens.
⭐ Congestion in the Strait of Malacca A factor specific to this passage — it is among the world’s busiest sea lanes, and congestion shows up in berthing times.
Disruption on sea lanes Moves rates generally — though its effect is smaller here because we cross the Indian Ocean without the Suez Canal.

How we work: five steps

1Eligibility, dates and dimensionsWhen you first arrived, and your home’s area, door and lift — before the price.
2Sorting the list into three categoriesProhibited, restricted and not eligible for relief — then explaining the undertaking to you.
3A quote with stated linesIncluding the declaration, the lift booking and any tax on ineligible items.
4Sailing, then the declaration and the liftWe send the declaration and book the lift while the shipment is still at sea.
5Clearance and deliveryFast clearance, then delivery on the booked lift with the waste removed the same day.

Five recurring mistakes — all avoidable

  • Submitting the declaration of facts late. The mistake most specific to Singapore — it is submitted before the shipment enters, and cannot be fixed once missed.
  • Disposing of the goods within three months. An undertaking extending past delivery — and many sign it without having it explained.
  • Assuming Singapore is Hong Kong. There, no tax at all; here, tax unless relief is granted.
  • Shipping large furniture without measuring. Housing is designed to precise dimensions — and a piece that will not fit is a double loss.
  • Leaving the service lift booking to delivery day. A shipment cleared the same day may wait days for a lift slot.

Why Tiger Cargo Express?

Because we know where the two battles are. Singapore is not Hong Kong despite every resemblance: there, there is nothing to be relieved of; here, relief is requested through a paper that precedes your shipment’s entry. And anyone treating it as a free port discovers the tax on the invoice.

And we explain the undertaking to you before you sign it — an obligation that begins after we deliver your shipment and runs for three months, and we have written nothing like it at fifty-four destinations. Because the worst thing a client can learn is that they breached a condition nobody told them about. We ask about your door and lift dimensions before we price, and tell you what is not worth shipping at all — even though it shrinks your shipment and our invoice with it.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Saudi Arabia to Singapore

How long does a shipment from Saudi Arabia to Singapore take? The voyage runs east across the Indian Ocean to the Strait of Malacca and does not pass through the Suez Canal, and Singapore’s schedules are among the densest in the world. The port itself is among the fastest we deal with — handling is disciplined and the distance to any address on the island is very short. ⚠️ So delay here is usually caused not by the port or the road but by two things: a paper not submitted on time, or a service lift slot. A shipment cleared the same day may wait days for a lift booking.
Singapore is a free port — so why are you talking about tax?Because “no duty” is one thing and “no tax” is another entirely. Customs duty in Singapore is close to non-existent, and the dutiable goods fall into just four categories: alcohol, tobacco, petroleum products and motor vehicles. ⚠️ But Singapore levies goods and services tax on imports — including your used effects — unless relief is granted. Compare with Hong Kong: there, no duty and no tax, and your household enters without a calculation; here, the concept of “relief” is fully in place with its conditions, its window and its paperwork. And anyone treating Singapore as Hong Kong discovers the tax on the invoice.
What is the “declaration of facts” and when is it submitted? It is the declaration submitted electronically to Singapore customs to request relief. ⭐ And the decisive detail: it is submitted before the goods enter customs territory — not after they arrive, not at clearance, and not when you are notified of berthing. Anyone submitting it late has not merely been slow — they may not be granted relief at all. Note the parallel with the USA: there a security filing precedes loading in Jeddah; here a declaration precedes entry into Singapore — the difference being that the American one stops you sailing and the Singaporean one stops you being relieved. And neither can be fixed once missed. So we prepare and submit it while your shipment is at sea.
What is this “undertaking” I will sign? This is the most important thing in this article — and we have written nothing like it at fifty-four destinations. Among the relief conditions is an undertaking not to dispose of the goods within three months of their importation. At every earlier destination your obligation ended at the delivery of your shipment to your door: cleared, delivered, file closed. Here a new obligation begins after the file closes. The logic is reasonable: the relief was granted because you are moving your home — not so that you can import relieved goods and sell them. ⚠️ Which means in practice: someone who arrives and then decides a month later that their sofa does not suit their compact apartment and sells it may have breached an undertaking they signed. And we tell you before you ship, not after you sell.
What are the conditions for obtaining relief? They work together. Who qualifies: a citizen or permanent resident returning to reside, or a foreigner transferring residence to Singapore. ⭐ The first condition: possession and use of three months or more — the shortest period in our whole series (Canada six months, the USA and Australia twelve, New Zealand twenty-one). The second: import within six months of your first arrival. The third: the undertaking not to dispose for three months after import. ⚠️ And an important caveat: some items are not granted relief even if you personally meet every condition — eligibility is personal, exclusions are by category, and the two are separate. Singapore is generous at the entrance and precise at the exit.
Should I ship my car to Singapore? This is the harshest car section in our series — and we say it with complete clarity. Singapore manages the number of vehicles on the island deliberately and is not an open market: vehicles are among the dutiable categories, so they carry duty and tax together; ⭐ and owning one requires a certificate of entitlement issued in limited numbers and bought at auction, whose value is among the highest in the world and may exceed the vehicle’s own value several times over; plus registration charges, specification requirements and limits on an imported vehicle’s age; and a metro network among the world’s most efficient on an island crossed in under an hour. So the question here is not “what does shipping cost?” nor “where will you park it?” — it is “can you own it at all?”.
Is it true that chewing gum is banned?Yes — and this is not an anecdote but a rule in force. Importing chewing gum is prohibited, except therapeutic types approved by the competent health authority. Another item surprises many too: pistol-shaped lighters are explicitly prohibitedand they are a common souvenir gift. ⭐ But the important thing is to distinguish three categories: prohibited, which does not enter at all · restricted, which enters with a licence, such as medicines, radio equipment and plants · and not eligible for relief, which enters lawfully but is taxed. The third is what surprises people, because it appears on no prohibited list — and then appears as a line on the invoice.
Why do you ask about my door and lift dimensions?Because the second battle in Singapore is inside the building — exactly as in Hong Kong. Most housing is towers and estates rather than detached houses, the service lift is booked with management and its slots are limited and may be taken days ahead, and some estates bar delivery at certain hours. ⭐ And most important: housing here is designed to precise dimensions — a piece that fits through the door may find nowhere to stand. We measure the door and the lift against your largest piece as packed, not bare, and tell you what is not worth shipping at all. Because a piece that will not fit your apartment is a total loss: you paid to ship it, then you pay to remove it.
My shipment is only a few boxes — do I need all of this? That is in fact the most suitable shipment for this destination. Shipments to Singapore are small by nature given how compact the housing is, and air freight here is a serious option rather than a luxury — Changi is one of Asia’s largest air-cargo hubs. ⭐ And a detail that simplifies matters greatly: postal parcels of non-controlled goods do not require a relief permit at all. The saving here is doubled: less shipped means less value to be taxed if relief is not granted, less transport cost, and less congestion in a compact apartment. We clearly favour the smaller shipment at this destination.
Will my appliances work there?Yes, mostly — the Singaporean voltage is close to the Gulf’s, unlike the USA and Canada. You will not need heavy, costly voltage transformers, only plug adaptors, which are cheap and light. ⚠️ But the real question here is not whether they work — it is whether they fit. Kitchens and rooms are designed to precise dimensions, and a large Gulf fridge may find no space in a Singaporean kitchen however excellent it is. So we ask for the apartment plan or its measurements before we price — and discuss with you what is better bought there to the room’s dimensions rather than shipped and then sold.
Do you handle embassy and international organisation shipments?Yes, and their presence in Singapore is substantial. Mission cargo and staff effects do not run through the personal-effects route and are not bound by its conditions — neither the three-month requirement nor the six-month window — and the basis is the mission’s status within the framework of the Vienna Convention of 1961. ⭐ And the clearest difference here concerns the undertaking specifically: we explained that individual relief is conditional on an undertaking extending three months beyond deliveryand that obligation, the only one in our series that begins after the file closes, does not exist in a mission’s file. But the building battle remains: we book the goods lift and the delivery window with management as we do for every client.
Do you ship from Singapore to Saudi Arabia?Yes, on the same port and routes. The dominant traffic is electronics and semiconductors, precision and medical equipment, chemicals and petroleum products, spare parts and marine equipment, alongside the effects of those returning. We review your list before loading in both directions, with attention to Saudi import restrictions and to re-export requirements on certain technical components — a matter settled before booking rather than after.

In summary

Singapore is the destination that asks you before you arrive: duty is close to non-existent, but tax is assessed on your effects unless relief is granted, and relief is requested through a declaration of facts preceding your shipment’s entry. Its conditions are three months’ possession — the shortest period in our series, six months from your first arrival, and ⭐ an undertaking not to dispose of the goods for three months after importthe only obligation in our entire series that begins after we close the file. Then a second battle begins: a service lift to be booked and a home designed to precise dimensions. What you need here is three things: a declaration sent early, an undertaking explained before signing, and measurements taken before pricing. Tiger Cargo Express gives you all three before you ship.
